The shootout likely occurred overnight or early morning of 27 June. The event was geolocated by Pernicious Propaganda to the  Nonoava – El Mirador highway, just east of the town of Tutuaca.

At the scene, authorities found five bodies, three of them burned, while the other two were located off the highway. Authorities found shell casings and five magazines, but no weapons or tactical gear, suggesting one group looted the scene after winning the firefight.
