Synthetic Drug Lab Dismantled in Acámbaro, Guanajuato With U.S. Intelligence

Following U.S. intelligence, Mexican security forces dismantled a synthetic drug lab in Iramuco, a rural region of Acámbaro, Guanajuato on Thursday, according to a Guanajuato Security Forces press release.

The operation was carried out on August 27 by Comisaría de Investigación de Campo (field investigators) and State Policeo, as well as the army and la Guardia Nacional. No arrests were made, as is common with Mexican seizures of drug labs.

At the site, which was partially hidden by a forest, security forces located large-capacity containers, storage systems, liquid and granular substances, as well as infrastructure that could be related to processes for the production of synthetic drugs. 

The government press release was careful to communicate that the U.S. exclusively provided intelligence for the operation, and no U.S. forces were on the ground, an explanation likely influenced by backlash in Mexico to the revelation that U.S. forces participated in a raid on another drug lab in Chihuahua state earlier this year.

The seizure of a drug lab is uncommon in Guanajuato, which is not a major drug production state, despite having the highest number of drug dealing cases in Mexico. Most of Guanajuato’s narcotics are brought in from other states like Michoacán. Several recent busts of precursor chemicals and nearby labs may suggest this is changing. 

Back in March, Guanajuato state police arrested two men who were transporting over 17,000 liters of chemical precursors used for making synthetic drugs on the Morelia–Salamanca highway, as reported by Borderland Beat.

A Connection Between the Labs? 

In September 2025, Federal authorities found two synthetic drug labs by Cerro del Zamorano, a remote mountainous region on the Guanajuato-Queretaro border. These labs appear to have a similar construction to the Acambaro lab. For example, the Queretaro labs as well as the Acambaro lab both use ‘Y’ shaped logs to support large metal distilling pipes. This design is fairly common in labs found in Sinaloa state, but rare in Michoacán.
