Locals reported hearing a loud blast around 3:00 a.m. in near the colonia 10 de mayo. A large security force contingent responded, but no suspects were identified.
This event coincided with Governor Yeraldine Bonilla Valverde’s visit to Escuinapa to hold a Security Roundtable.
The location of the carbomb is odd, with no apparent soft targets or infrastructure nearby. It may have detonated prematurely.
No injuries or deaths were reported, although the surrounding buildings were damaged. The vehicle was almost completely destroyed by the explosion.
The use of car bombs is quite rare in Mexico, with around 20 car bomb attacks since 1994 in Mexico, according to Víctor Manuel Sánchez Valdés, a security researcher from the University of Coahuila.
